The Convergence of Strategy & Leadership: Essential for Successful Start-ups & SMMEs

Successful start-ups and SMMEs require the convergence of sound strategy and capable leadership. Strategy provides direction and establishes priorities, while leadership mobilises the people, resources and capabilities required for execution. As enterprises develop, aligning strategy, leadership and organisational capability strengthens resilience, sustainable growth and the ability to create value within the wider communities and ecosystems in which they operate.

Start-ups and small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) operate in environments where resources are often constrained, markets are competitive, and founders must make important decisions while simultaneously establishing and growing their businesses.

South African research identifies inadequate entrepreneurial leadership capabilities, insufficient understanding of the business environment, weaknesses in management capability and gaps in strategic and operational systems among the challenges affecting SMME performance and sustainability (Mhlongo & Daya, 2023; Sheik & Kader, 2022).

These challenges reinforce an important principle: developing sustainable enterprises requires both sound strategy and capable leadership. Neither can replace the other.

Strategy Provides Direction; Leadership Enables Execution

Strategy establishes where the enterprise is going and the choices required to get there. For start-ups and SMMEs, this includes understanding the environment in which the business operates, identifying the customers it intends to serve, determining how it will create value, establishing priorities and deciding how available resources and capabilities should be deployed.

This is particularly important where resources are limited. A business cannot pursue every opportunity or develop every capability simultaneously. Strategic clarity enables the enterprise to focus its resources and activities on the priorities most important to its development. Mkhonza's (2024) integrative review of South African small-business literature similarly identifies strategic planning, adaptability, proactive management and customer focus among the competencies associated with organisational performance.

Strategy, however, cannot produce results on its own.

Leadership provides the judgement, decision-making and mobilisation required to translate strategic direction into action. This is particularly important in start-ups and SMMEs, where the Founder often carries significant responsibility for both strategic decisions and execution.

As the enterprise develops, the leadership requirement also evolves. The founder increasingly needs to mobilise people, knowledge and resources, delegate responsibilities, draw on specialised expertise and develop the capabilities required for the business to operate effectively beyond the Founder's individual effort.

Research by Sheik and Kader (2022) reinforces the importance of this transition. Their study of SMMEs in KwaZulu-Natal identified weaknesses in management structures, performance-management systems and strategic and operational frameworks among the constraints affecting enterprise sustainability and development.

The capabilities required to establish an enterprise are therefore not necessarily the same capabilities required to grow it. As the business develops, strategy, leadership and organisational capability must continue to evolve together.

Building Sustainable and Resilient Enterprises

Sustainable enterprise development is not only about increasing revenue, expanding market share or growing the size of the business. It also requires attention to profitability, financial prudence, operational stability, adaptability and the relationships that support the enterprise over time.

Enterprises do not operate in isolation. They exist within wider networks of customers, employees, suppliers, partners, institutions and communities. The strength of these relationships can contribute to enterprise resilience, while sustainable businesses can in turn create employment, economic activity and value within the communities and ecosystems in which they operate.

This wider perspective is particularly important for start-ups and SMMEs. Growth should therefore be accompanied by the development of the leadership, systems, capabilities and relationships required to sustain the enterprise as its environment and responsibilities change.

It also highlights an important distinction between the founder and the enterprise. A capable founder does not automatically create a capable business. The founder may possess technical expertise, entrepreneurial ability or industry knowledge while the enterprise still requires stronger strategy, systems, structures and organisational capabilities. Equally, a sound strategy requires leadership capable of executing it.

At Goshen Business and Career Advisory Services, we recognise this interdependence in supporting founders and enterprises. Founder development and enterprise development have distinct requirements, but they converge in building businesses capable of performing, adapting and growing sustainably.

For start-ups and SMMEs, the convergence of strategy and leadership is therefore fundamental. Strategy provides direction. Leadership mobilises action. Organisational capability enables delivery. Together, they strengthen the enterprise's ability to build resilience, create value and pursue sustainable long-term growth.
